Additional Improvements:
Intersection Upgrades:
- Reconstruct Sagamore Parkway ramp intersection as a roundabout
- Evaluate potential roundabout at Kalberer Road
- Retain other intersections as conventional unsignalized
Driveways and Accessibility:
- Replacement of driveway approaches within the right-of-way
- ADA-compliant curb ramps at intersections
- Trail and sidewalk connections to existing infrastructure
Design Changes (March 2026 Update)
Engineering refinements are currently underway for both phases. These adjustments reflect continued technical review and community input, with a focus on safety and long-term functionality.
Phase 1 – Design Changes in Progress
Raised Intersection – Cumberland Avenue
A raised intersection has been incorporated at Cumberland Avenue as a traffic-calming measure to reduce vehicle speeds along Soldiers Home Road.
Multi-Use Trail Relocation
The multi-use trail has been relocated entirely to the west side of Soldiers Home Road to eliminate mid-corridor crossings and enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety. A sidewalk will remain on the east side.
Enhanced Crosswalks
Crosswalks are now planned at:
- Sagamore Parkway Roundabout
- Cumberland Avenue
- Hamilton Street
A third crosswalk has been added at Cumberland Avenue.
All crosswalks will include:
- Flashing pedestrian beacons
- Pedestrian warning signage
These improvements enhance visibility and increase driver awareness.
Bus Stop Safety Improvement
A concrete center median will be added at the bus stop in front of University Crossing Apartments (2501 Soldiers Home Road) to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
Stormwater Improvements
Stormwater detention features have been added to mitigate downstream impacts and improve drainage performance.
Phase 2 – Design Changes in Progress
Kalberer Road Roundabout
The intersection at Kalberer Road will be constructed as a roundabout to improve traffic flow and enhance safety.
Anticipated Right-of-Way Needs
Permanent and/or temporary right-of-way will be needed on each side of the roadway to accommodate the improvements. Acquisition needs will vary by property but generally range from 5 to 10 feet.
Approximately 75 parcels will be impacted across both phases.
Traffic Maintenance During Construction
Soldiers Home Road will be closed to through-traffic during construction. Key details:
- Official detour routes will be established
- Each phase will include sub-phases to improve local access and reduce detour times
- Street and driveway connections with a single outlet will be constructed in halves to maintain access
Funding
This project utilizes federal funding with a required local funding match.
