PROJECT OVERVIEW
The West Lafayette Wastewater Treatment Utility (WWTU) is undergoing a significant expansion to modernize its operations and prepare for continued growth in our community. This multi-phase effort includes constructing a wet weather facility, decommissioning the lagoon system, and expanding treatment capacity. These improvements support our commitment to environmental stewardship, public health, and long-term infrastructure sustainability.
Improving capacity, reliability, and environmental performance without increasing rates for existing users.
Approved in December 2024, this facility is currently under construction. A crane is onsite completing early work. Once complete, the facility will store and treat excess wastewater during heavy rains, preventing overflows into local waterways, particularly the Wabash River.

The lagoon previously stored fully treated biosolids, which were applied to agricultural fields as fertilizer. This system is being phased out to make room for modern infrastructure. Removing the lagoon will also eliminate odors and free up valuable space within the treatment plant.
With space made available from the lagoon closure, new primary clarifiers will be built as part of a much larger project to increase our overall daily treatment capacity – critical to supporting West Lafayette’s growth and meeting state environmental standards.
West Lafayette is committed to increasing the utility’s total capacity to 15 MGD to ensure safe, efficient wastewater service for future generations.
Design work for the expansion is already underway and is expected to take 12–18 months to complete. Construction will begin following final design approvals.
One of the project’s guiding goals is to complete this critical work without increasing utility rates for current users.
Reliable wastewater infrastructure is essential to health, safety, and development. This expansion ensures we can welcome new residents and businesses without compromising environmental quality or service to our current community. It’s an investment in West Lafayette’s future.
