Mayoral Groundbreaking Ceremony to Begin Final Phase of CSO Project WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Nov. 19, 2024) — West Lafayette Mayor Erin Easter …
About
West Lafayette has completed a major project that started in 2016. The final phase of the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project expanded the City’s wet weather treatment facility, increasing treatment capacity to 2.6 million gallons. The project also works in conjunction with more than 3 million gallons of storage provided by the CSO Relief Interceptor and River Road CSO Tunnel, allowing the City to capture, store, and treat wet weather flows more effectively. Together, these improvements have made combined sewer overflow events rare while protecting the Wabash River and supporting future growth.
This phase also brings another new addition: a LEED Silver certified administration and laboratory building, the city’s first municipal building to achieve this environmentally friendly certification. These new facilities will enhance both the efficiency and sustainability of our treatment efforts, reflecting West Lafayette’s commitment to a greener, more resilient future. This portion of the project is still under construction.
UNDERSTANDING COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS
This page documents the CSO Final Phase capital project. For information about how combined sewers work, CSO notifications, West Lafayette’s long-term CSO reduction efforts, and frequently asked questions, visit the City’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) resource page.
Protecting Our Waterways
This project will help keep untreated water from overflowing into the Wabash River, ensuring cleaner, healthier water for the community and local wildlife. Check out this video from phase 2 of the CSO project to learn more about the River Road part of the project.
Improving Public Health and Safety
By expanding our treatment capacity, we’re reducing the risk of sewage overflows and supporting a cleaner, safer environment for everyone in West Lafayette.
Building for the Future
With new, sustainable facilities, including a LEED Silver certified lab, we’re investing in resilient infrastructure that will serve our growing community for years to come. Learn more about LEED certifications at usgbc.org/leed.
Minimal Public Disturbance
Unlike the other phases of the CSO project, this final phase will produce minimal disruption to residents, as construction will primarily occur within the Water Resource Recovery Facility property.
