Project Overview

This project will construct an ADA-compliant restroom building with two gender‑neutral stalls at George E. Lommel Park. The facility will include a drinking fountain, bottle‑filling station, and a public Wi‑Fi hotspot to improve comfort and accessibility for park visitors. A small storage area will support park operations.

The project was identified in the Parks & Recreation 5‑Year Strategic Master Plan and is funded through the 2025 WLRDC (West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission) Spending Plan.

Project Details

Why This Project

West Lafayette Parks & Recreation updates its Strategic Master Plan every five years in accordance with Indiana Department of Natural Resources requirements. The most recent update was completed in Fall 2022.
The plan reflects:

  • Community input gathered before the plan was written and approved
  • Safety and operational requirements to keep parks and green spaces functional
  • Projected funding available for new projects

Adding restrooms at Lommel Park directly responds to resident feedback and enhances accessibility for all users.

Public Input & outreach

We recognize the importance of transparent engagement and clear communication. For this project, the City held an in person Public Input Session on August 13, 2025, for the duration of the West Lafayette Farmers Market. At the booth, staff displayed a rendering of the proposed restroom and discussed design details.  
How we advertised:

  • The session was advertised on the West Lafayette Parks & Recreation Instagram and Facebook accounts
  • City staff from Parks & Recreation and Development were on site to answer questions and collect feedback throughout the event

What we heard:
Resident sentiment was overwhelmingly positive, with several attendees noting it was “about time” a restroom was added to the park.

Project timeline (anticipated)
  • September 17, 2025 – Project released for bid
  • November 19, 2025 – Target date for construction contract award
  • Spring 2026 – Majority of construction
  • November 2025 – Foundation work may begin (weather dependent)
  • By June 30, 2026 – Target project completion and delivery

Dates are subject to change based on procurement, weather, and site conditions. Updates will be posted here.

What to expect during construction
  • Temporary closures of areas may occur near the work area for safety
  • The City will post on site signage and update this page as schedules are finalized
