Temporary Traffic Signal Planned at Kalberer Road and Yeager Road

As work on the SK hynix project continues, a temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Kalberer Road and Yeager Road to help manage increased traffic, reduce congestion and improve safety at the intersection.

SK hynix has received a City right-of-way permit for the temporary signal and is responsible for the cost and installation.

Installation may begin as early as Saturday, August 22. Most of the initial work will take place outside of the roadway, with short-duration lane restrictions possible as installation progresses. Drivers should watch for advance-warning signs, workers and temporary traffic control in the area.

Once operational, the temporary signal will function like a typical traffic signal and will respond to traffic at the intersection. It will also include pedestrian features and emergency vehicle preemption for the West Lafayette Fire Department.

The signal will help manage both construction-related and general traffic traveling through the intersection.

Why a Temporary Signal?

A traffic impact study completed for the SK hynix project identified a permanent traffic signal at Kalberer Road and Yeager Road as a recommended intersection improvement based on projected traffic conditions when the facility reaches full buildout.

Design of the permanent signal is already underway. In response to current traffic conditions at the intersection, the temporary signal will provide traffic control while the permanent signal is designed and constructed.

The temporary signal is expected to remain in place until the permanent signal is operational.  The permanent signal is anticipated to be installed within the next six months.

What Drivers Can Expect

During installation, most travel lanes are expected to remain open. Short-duration lane restrictions may be necessary for portions of the work, including installation of signal equipment and overhead components.

When overhead work is underway, traffic may be temporarily stopped by approved traffic-control personnel.

Before the temporary signal is placed into normal operation, it will be tested and activated in coordination with the City.

Once the permanent traffic signal is operational, the temporary equipment will be removed and affected pavement, curb, sidewalk, turf and drainage areas will be restored as necessary.

Drivers traveling through Kalberer Road and Yeager Road should use caution and watch for changing traffic conditions as installation progresses.
