Groundbreaking Set for West Lafayette Wet Weather Treatment Expansion

Mayoral Groundbreaking Ceremony to Begin Final Phase of CSO Project

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Nov. 19, 2024) — West Lafayette Mayor Erin Easter and her team will break ground on the final phase of the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Project on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the West Lafayette Water Resource Recovery Facility, 500 S. River Road, West Lafayette. Before the groundbreaking, attendees will hear remarks from West Lafayette Director of Communications Michelle Brantley, Mayor Erin Easter, West Lafayette Utility Director Dave Henderson, and Bowen Engineering Project Manager Matt Meyer. Event parking is available in the facility’s gravel lot.

Upon completion, the project will increase the city’s combined sewage treatment capacity from 600,000 to 2.6 million gallons, equipping West Lafayette to manage wet weather effectively and reduce overflow events, even in extreme conditions, thereby maintaining high public health standards. The project also includes the city’s first municipal LEED Silver certified administration and laboratory building.

This groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of the final phase of a three-part project aimed at reducing CSO incidents and improving the health of the Wabash River. Since the initial phase was completed in 2016, overflow events have significantly declined, from 150 incidents in five years to fewer than five incidents in the last eight years.

“This project is about safeguarding our future,” Mayor Easter said. “By expanding our wet weather treatment system, we ensure clean water to protect the environment we all love.”

The final phase of construction, which is expected to have minimal impact on residents, will primarily occur within the Water Resource Recovery Facility’s property. Completion is anticipated by spring 2026.
